About this event

This program was funded in part by Arizona Humanities through our Mini Grant program.

Come join Arizona Talks for a special Friendsgiving edition of Third Thursdays. We’ll share a meal and a

conversation about Indigenous foods and what makes communities work. Chef Amber Sampson, a cultural

anthropologist and board member of Slow Food Phoenix, will lead a discussion with attendees on Arizona’s

“Ark of Taste,” foods, the native and heritage ingredients that have fed this region for generations. Sampson

has spent years documenting ingredients like White Sonora wheat, tepary beans, cholla buds, and

greenthread tea back to the land and the people who first grew them, research that grew into an upcoming

documentary with Slow Food Phoenix funded by Arizona Humanities. Her talk centers on sustainability,

cooperation, gratitude, and the idea that sharing a meal is in itself an act of cultural preservation. Expect a few

ingredients you may have never tried and the stories behind them.

Sampson will be joined by Chef and Storyteller Mario Etsitty, a member of the Navajo Nation and owner of The Rez an Urban Eatery. Save the date. Get ready to pull up a chair, your thoughts, and your appetite! Please note: This event will be recorded.
